ROLE PERFORMANCE – As a member of the Opera Performance Studio you will be assigned a role to sing in a staged performance with the MAI Festival Orchestra. Leading roles are double cast to ensure performances in the event of illness. Secondary roles are usually single cast and may include more than one role. All artists are considered for cover roles that they feel will benefit their technical and dramatic aspirations as an artist. Additional performances include Opera Galas with the MAI Orchestra.
ROLE & AUDITION PREP – Vocal Coaching/Diction: Young artist will be provided vocal coaching to prepare all roles assigned at MAI, as well as given the opportunity to prepare audition arias for future auditions. This is a great opportunity to add new arias to your audition package, or to polish arias that are already in your repertoire. The opportunity to artistically and dramatically prepare your audition repertoire with such world-renowned professionals is invaluable to young artists.
VOICE LESSONS – At MAI, voice lessons are a regular part of your daily training. Our faculty artists are among the finest voice teachers available in the world today. They have enjoyed major performing careers and are engaged by leading opera houses and major conservatories of music. A complete faculty list is available on the Faculty Tab.
MASTER CLASSES – Master Classes are an integral part of your training at MAI and cover a wide variety of specialties including; vocal technique, performance repertoire, auditioning, operatic style, dramatic interpretation, language/diction, cross over, and business aspects of managing a professional career.
DICTION CLASSES – Diction is provided in a classroom setting and is taught by our vocal coaching staff. Young Artists are divided into classes depending on the roles that they have been selected to perform. 2019 diction classes will be offered in Italian, German, and English.
ACTING CLASSES – MAI offers acting classes that concentrate on the development of stage relationships and characterization while respecting the vocal demands of the operatic repertoire. We are proud to have Vince DeGeorge, chair of acting at CCM to head up our acting classes at MAI.
ARTIST MANAGEMENT CONSULTATIONS & PROFESSIONAL AUDITIONS – Young Artists at MAI have the unique opportunity to take part in artist management workshops and consultations offered by Mitchell Piper, owner of Piper Anselmi Artist Management, one of the top management firms in the world today. Professional management auditions are offered as part of your experience at MAI. In addition to auditions for Piper Anselmi, Mitchell Piper uses his extensive connections to bring in artistic directors from leading German and Austrian opera houses that will also hear the MAI young artists. No other YAP offers the opportunity for advanced young artists to actually sign a professional management contract or to be hired by a professional company.
